It seems this really is just a rumor. Luke Hutchison(the guy who
actually implemented the multi-touch hack) has this to say about the
issue:

If you look at his work, he has a good deal of credibility.  Since I
don't plan on going through the whole codebase myself this week, I'll
take his word for it.
