Paul,

Many people have approached Android with a business mind, and therefore
if the early apps don't succeed they may well take it as a sign that
there isn't a sufficient market to support a business based around Android.

The best way to see improvements in apps is to give feedback to the
developer, that way they can tell what's important to users and where to
concentrate development efforts (they may even have space something like
http://featurelist.org/ or http://uservoice.com/). Sitting back and
saying "Nope, not willing to pay for this yet" is only going to make
developers think the apps they're producing aren't interesting and that
they should move on to other projects.
