You have a point, it is up to the developer where they sell their app, they
can even take pains to control the conditions their app can run on through
means like DRM, but by the same logic the user generally has the opportunity
to get hold of cracked software and use it without paying. Time has proven
that DRM is a temporary solution to a permanent problem.

Speaking as a user and a developer, I personally prefer not to be
immediately suspected as a potential criminal when I legally purchase
software, that's assuming that I have been given the opportunity in the
first place. So far, the android platform has been fairly distanced from
this reputation, when compared to Apple's platform or the PC games industry.

With companies like EA announcing that they will ditch DRM for future game
titles, would it be too idealistic to consider that Android titles could
still thrive without DRM technologies?

The idea of a common copy protection API that JBQ floated would go a long
way to easing this situation because it would reduce the need for a
developer to adapt their app for each app stores copy protection, but at the
end of the day if the developer doesn't want additional revenue streams then
that's their choice.
