I'm not a developer, just another geeky user. But in all honesty, after having my G1 since Dec. 28, 2008, and testing well over a hundred apps, I can say a few things about the G1 and Android:
1. The camera still sucks, even with Snap (much better, but G1 stalled and crashed). And I bet for $2 more production cost, there could be a flash. Limp, limp, limp. 2. The onboard memory is obviously way too small or not cleared or used well. Hopefully post G1 Android devices will quadruple the RAM or more even. This is no fun as is. Apps run slow, etc. Maybe the long tauted Cupcake will help, but zzzzz, I'm tired of yanking the battery on mine when it runs slow. 3. Why can't more apps run off-board, from the SDmicro RAM? 4. As a user, there's no real way of seeing what's wrong when apps run slow, or to know if there is a "bad" app installed. It's all trial and error. If an app is know to performance damaging effects, we need user alerts. Sometimes I browse the market and install 4 or 5 cool new apps, only to find out days later that one is a performance hog or is not compatible with other apps or needs a reboot before it works well or who knows. A little information goes a long way. At least the platform won't get a bad rap for program deficiencies. Maybe a performance rating in percent would help. e.g. "If you install this app, it uses 25% of G1 RAM." The bigger the number, the less expectations and more easily identified when issues arise. Now, with nothing, it sure looks like the G1 or Android is at fault. 5. A developer's rating for apps, parallel but separate from the user ratings would be cool. Where only devs could post, but all could read. Think of it as the academy awards, rated by peers. 6. And who came up with the five silly reasons for uninstalling an app? There is no way to rate an app as SLOW, INTRUSIVE, UPGRADING (not really uninstalling), prefer THIS OTHER APP, etc, without going back to the comment page and on a lil phone with lil keys, etc, I don't want to spend the time to do that. I want to get on with it. 7. As a user, I have no indications that performance improvements are in the works. Nobody's talking to users. I singed up here to get some info; but it's dev heavy and what user groups are out there are often full of sophomoric babble and textme4sex personals, etc. Seems like Google and T-mobile think "OK, you bought, now just go away." But buy apps. There are some great apps out there too, and things will get better, but it's pretty dark in the forest and some of us early adopters are feeling a little used right now. I have the phone, Google and T-mobile know this. I have it almost 4 months now. I have not gotten a monthly newsletter, or anything. A G1 email newsletter each month (not too often) would be great, so I know they remember I'm out here and that they care. I have to think now, maybe I should of got an iPhone. Do they treat their fans better? 8. Lest I forget, the wickedest thing about the G1, the contact list importation. This was next to impossible when I got my G1. I left Verizon with my CSV file of contacts. There was no way in Hell to get that list into my G1 despite the documentation and T-mobile both claiming to support CSV import. I finally was able to import my Gmail contacts into my phone, which got me my current gmail contacts, with no phone numbers, I was not in the habit of entering phone numbers into my Gmail contact list. When I imported my CSV list to gmail, it did not sync them with the existing gmail contact email addresses. I have to manually cut and paste 150 contacts info. It took me hours to do what should have taken minutes. It also hosed my existing Gmail contact list. This almost made me return my G1, but I wanted it bad, so I stuck it out. Ok, I may not be as smart as the average Joe, but I work in tech and have been using PCs and software for about 25 years. With my old Samsung phone, it was easy to export and import numbers. This time it was down right painful. Google and providers need to make sure this is EASY and even elegant. There's no good reason for it not to be. Like any other computer, I find myself waiting for better days and OS improvements that stop the current inadequacies from wasting my time. I'm done now. Think I'll try to get to room 94 in Prime Full or play some RockOut Acoustic Pro Android guitar. Two Great Android apps!!! (No, I'm not affiliated with either). tekrytor --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Discuss" group.
