Lots of people have lots of ideas on how to solve the SD card problem,
I see them pop up on these lists, on forums, and very occasionally in
my own head :)

The problem with many of these ideas is that they are often not backed
up with plans for providing an implementation. This doesn't make such
ideas any less valid, it just makes them near pointless because they
burn brightly in a discussion list and then fizzle out. If someone is
serious about his idea, they will take on board Mark/Al's concerns and
use their existing skills to get the ball rolling. A start would be to
address those issues directly and hire some developers to make a start
on something substantial.

I like your idea, but unless you take on board what Mark says, that is
what it will remain: an idea. Good ideas come and go all the time, but
as long as everyone has their own ideas for everything, it is only the
ideas belonging to the ones who get off their asses and do something
that will ever become a reality. Brainstorm sites can go some way to
countering this, but you'll probably find that the majority of
brainstorm ideas that actually get developed are backed in some
significant way by the person who posted them.

Seeing that you asked for feedback, I think the AppManager-style
solution is workable, but there are some serious caveats. Transferring
an apk between filesystems before launching an application is going to
have a detriment effect on the load time, and we're not just talking a
couple of seconds. Even if it was a couple of seconds, it will still
make the platform feel sluggish. Limiting it to the least used apps
helps a bit, but still problematic. For example I only play games or
open the weather app very occasionally, but when I do start one I
don't intend to wait 8 seconds for file transfers to complete before I
even see a splash screen.

The idea is interesting though, perhaps with some further thought it
could work. Let us know your plans.
