It's not obvious actually. I run with the GPS setting on all the time, and Latitude, and notice no serious battery drain. Let's be clear, the GPS setting in the settings pane is a privacy option *only* (despite the terrible wording about battery life). It just controls whether GPS is used when an app asks for a location fix. In 1.5 getting a GPS fix is way faster thanks to AGPS unless you are using wifi at the time, in which case a wifi fix is usually accurate enough anyway. So GPS isn't the power suck it once was. I think you'll find that if you just enable it and then forget about it, your battery life won't be noticeably worse, unless you have some kind of badly written app that asks for a precise fix every 60 seconds or something.
