I prefer using the HTC Magic to the G1, until I need a keyboard.  If I
didn't also have a blackberry I'd love the Magic less.  Also some apps
do depend on the physical keyboard.  I couldn't figure out how to save
a game in Doom without it.

I prefer using the G1 for development.
