My suggestion is when using hardware-keyboard. When I use the software
screen-keyboard my fingers are already on the screen and so there is
not really any extra effort in choosing a character from the popup-
window that appears after long-press.

When i long-press for example "a" or "o" on the hardware-keyboard a
list of alternative characters (5-10 different characters for a or o)
appears on the screen. Now I have to MANUALLY choose a character from
that list by touching the screen och using the trackball. That means I
have change position of my hand and fingers in order to do that. This
is what I want to avoid.

For example: I long-press "a" to get the list of alternate characters
(popup window). From this list I often use two different characters,
"å" and "ä". If I could choose "å" by pressing for example "1", and
choose "ä" by pressing "2" I wouldn't have to lift my fingers off from
the hardware keyboard and it would increase speed of writing and make
it much easier. Now I often ignore the special characters and use the
"english" character instead because it's much faster.

Dave: If you long-press "s", don't you get a popup-window with a list
of alternative characters from which you have to choose "ß" by
touching it or use the trackball and click on it?
