It's not limited to the Magic.

I'm experiencing a similar thing on my G1 from time to time and have to turn
WiFi off and then back on again to make the connection usable.

Subject: [android-discuss] Re: HTC Magic Wifi not working

I've been having similar problems with my HTC Magic. Whilst i've been
waiting for Vodaphone to connect me to their network, i've been
playing with some of the Android's features over WiFi and have
experienced problems similar to those described here, i.e. finds the
wifi connection (which is encrypted) and appears to connect
successfully but, when apps on the phone try to use the connection,
it's either incredibly slow or doesn't work at all.

However, i've had some success in improving the quality of the
connection by:

i) switching my router's wifi channel (I think it's now set to 3); and
ii) resolving an IP conflict with another device on the network. I
have a media PC that sleeps and, when it wakes, can often conflict
with other devices on the network that have been added whilst the
media PC is sleeping.

It's still not perfect, but it's much better. Definitely be interested
to know if someone figures this one out!
