I know that root access can be attained on any (or just about any) android device in one way or another, but my question is this: Can legitimate root access be had on a legitimately unlocked MyTouch? In other words, if I go buy, outright and without a contract, a new MyTouch 3G from T-Mobile, am I allowed to have root access? Or is it still something they don't want to allow? Note that in that context, I'm not even sure who "they" are, as I would not even be a T-Mobile customer.
To state my quest in another way, I want to buy an HTC Magic and have full control of it. Just like when I buy a computer. And I would prefer to accomplish this without having to use a back door of some sort. Also, as far as I know, the only way to buy a new HTC Magic in the U.S. and fully own it is to buy a MyTouch 3G from T-Mobile without a contract for service.
