About the original question: "Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." Android fits in the "accessible" part of the mission. Releasing the source code under Open-Source licenses makes it easier for device manufacturers to create smartphones, so that more smartphones are available. The net result of the Open-Source aspect is that information is accessible to more people than what would be possible without the Open-Source aspect.
