About the original question: "Google's mission is to organize the
world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."
Android fits in the "accessible" part of the mission. Releasing the
source code under Open-Source licenses makes it easier for device
manufacturers to create smartphones, so that more smartphones are
available. The net result of the Open-Source aspect is that
information is accessible to more people than what would be possible
without the Open-Source aspect.
