A recent global piracy study of PC software (http://global.bsa.org/ globalpiracy2008/index.html) indirectly reveals several interesting things:
1) The Android Market is available only in countries with lower piracy rates (with the exception of India). 2) None of the countries with Android Market are listed among the countries with the top 20 piracy rates. 3) The US, which I assume makes up the bulk of Market downloads, has the lowest piracy rate in the survey of over 100 countries.
