Interesting proposal. What's to stop someone from reinstalling the app
- or wiping the phone - to reset the clock? When I coded my own 1-week
trial, I concluded that preventing such such actions was impossible
without checking with some data store that's not on the device.

In the USA, on a "Google experience" device? Probably very few. In
countries where Market doesn't support paid apps, or on other devices?
Probably quite a lot. There are going to be a LOT of phones that fit
these descriptions, and these folks will get their apps from
somewhere.
