Hasn't the droid got the "Skip" button on the signup that lets you bypass it? On my UK G1 I could do this, set up a WiFi connection, then go into one of the Google apps and enter my details once the WiFi configuration is up and running. (before you ask, my SIM was on O2 so the G1 didn't have the correct APN settings, hence the need for WiFi).
