I don't get any of this inconsistency, perhaps people are referring to bugs in different versions of Android?
On my Nexus One phone: When I click the back button, it navigates back one screen, when I press the home button, it takes me back to the home screen. ALWAYS. My phone acts just like a Web browser. Which is the experience people would expect from an interface coming from Google, and most people are familiar with from their PC's. My non-technical girlfriend has no problem using it, even after years of using an iPod. I appreciate you are trying to bring a constructive argument to the table Peter, but 2 things are missing: citing real-world cases when the Android navigation buttons have been too confusing for someone, and what you are suggesting should be done realistically (dictate to vendors how they should all be making their phones? recall all the existing phones, or leave existing users with broken devices?) No, what you demonstrated is that Android is inconsistent. You cited a completely different situation in which it follows the logic we both agree is correct. That doesn't in any way contradict my observation that there are some situations where it *doesn't* behave that way. For example: Start out with an application running. Hit Home, then hit Back. It doesn't take you back to the application you were just in. Start out with an application running. Hold down Home to bring up the application menu, and use it to switch to a different application. Now hit Back. It doesn't take you back to the application you were just in. > The 'Home' button in a browser is like a navigation...it does not clear the stack. Exactly.
