Actually the G1 is possible. Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624545. There may be some other reason it has not been officially ported over, but as a G1 owner, I can say 2.1r2 is quite stable and responsive. I also have a Nexus One, but the G1 isn't quite as snappy as it is (of course).
