I have been creating PDA apps since 1998 starting with the Palm and have
built up a world wide niche market. A couple years ago people started
inquiring iPhone apps. However since I don't own a Mac and was noticing
more open J2ME and the emerging Android platform I jumped on board the
latter. Most of my customers were only inquiring as they had yet to buy
a smart phone but wanted to consolidate their phone and PDA. Some did
have the dual phone/PDAs and using my apps (Palm and Pocket PC). Now
that I have a full featured program for Android they're complaining that
the show stopper is the $30 extra they have to pay for data over a phone
plan. And I have a few who would like the app but run it on an iPod
Touch like device. I'm surprised we aren't seeing more of the latter.
And of course data only phones might overcome that fee problem. I for
one don't talk much on my phone and the phone fee is actually the
premium. It will be interesting to see what shakes out over the
Verizon Skype thing. A lot more phones could be sold if the monthly was
only $30 or even $40.
