My experience with trial period applications is the pirates will download
and break trial system to get the full version. But if you make the full
version only available as a different runtime as a paid app they won't buy
it to break it.
That's pretty interesting, as it means: 1) pirates don't want to pay
anything for the app; 2) they don't want a paper trail with their (or
someone else's) credit card.
I assume that there is a practical reason for just disabling the features
for a trial version: ease of development? Easier upgrade path for user?
That would really depend on the product. My users may just want to see
how easy it is to enter data and how it is displayed. In that case I
could offer canned data to demo the program. Of course with games one
that just has level one works well. If they like it they can buy the
rest of the game. Putting out a free version that a key enables more
features is inviting pirates to the challenge. It used to be that
complex registration keys were impossible to break until the pirates
started using zombie computers to break the keys.
