There are strong reasons to only target a segment of a market at
launch. Like the high end. A lot of companies do great targeting the
high end.

Would you rather have every Moto Droid user download your app, and
give it 5 stars, or have every Android user download your app, and
give it 1 star?

Also, I don't expect devices to go down in version number. What I
want to know is how many Android 1.x devices will ever get Android
2.x. Or will the G1 just get Android 1.999... repeating.

On a similar note, Admob posted new numbers not too long ago:

http://metrics.admob.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/AdMob-Mobile-Metrics-Mar-10.pdf

In their words:

"In this month’s report, we look at the impact of the launch of new
devices on the Android ecosystem."

What surprised me is that Android 1.5 was actually gaining market
share. 2.X was also gaining market share, with 1.6 decreasing.

It looks the HTC Hero is more popular then I expected it to be. Is
there any word on when it will upgrade off of 1.5, for the major
carriers?

I think we are have hit the point where consumer purchasing behavior
is starting to have a real impact on the direction Android heads. It
has become a consumer brand to some extent, we are starting to have
users who are picking their 2nd Android phone, etc.

My 2 cents,
-MK
