Well, it happened again last night.  Without warning, the phone
starting reporting low memory and I missed a couple of texts.  Turns
out that at least one problem is that the Facebook and Twitter apps
seem to grow continuously.  Presumably due to caching of profile pics,
etc.?  Anyway, I cleared the data for both of them and got about 15MB
back.  I don't remember this happening with them before this issue
developed.

I am still going to do the factory reset.  Maybe today.
