I've never understood why tech startups locate in San Francisco other
than for prestige. SF is expensive real estate and most people can't
afford to live there. Much more affordable is the East Bay. The best
location to live is the South Bay if you want to play high tech roulette
as far as jobs go. During the dot com boom housing there go so
unaffordable that maintenance people for the tech offices could no
longer afford to live there. There were grandiose ideas of providing
high speed rail so they could commute in from the Central Valley. But
you would get silence if you asked the tech CEOs if they were willing to
pay more in taxes to fund such a project.
