At least Google IO is reasonably priced.
Is there a state park with tent camping nearby? ;)
For the Game Developer's Conference (in SF a couple weeks before Google
IO -- not trying to do both this year) I'm staying in Oakland a short
walk from Rockridge Bart at a place I found on airbnb.com.

It's a full in-law studio apartment, and it cost $70/night. If you don't
mind renting a room in a house, you can do even better than that. I used
to live in the area, so I knew I'd be comfortable with the neighborhood,
and it's about a 20 minute Bart ride into the city from there.

I live a 30 minutes drive from Moscone during non rush hours. The most expensive part would be the bridge toll and parking. The problem with BART is often parking near the East Bay Stations and crowded trains during rush hour. Hence I often attended conferences on "programmer's hours" (arriving around 11 AM and leaving after 7 PM).
