I do the same thing as Tobias. Have them buy it through the Market and then paypal them the $3.
For all the reasons already stated: 1. I don't like making it that easy to redistribute the apk. 2. I want them to get future updates. I don't want to have to deal with resending out a version with subsequent updates. 3. It's not worth the time to walk a non-technical user through installing it outside of the market.
