I'm imagining a middleware solution that allows you to drop in a
"product upgrade" that would allow a free version to be upgraded based
on a key code. Each code could unlock your "premium" version. Wouldn't
be that hard, but I know not everyone has the skills (or interest) to do
both the client and server side. I'm actually working on similar
functionality for my current app, so I'll already have a lot of the
groundwork done. An ad company is telling me they're seeing $300-$700
eCPMs on their new offer wall service, and while I'm not ready to
believe I'll see those results, those numbers are compelling enough to
spend a few days integrating their solution and setting up a server to
talk to it. Once I'm there, it wouldn't be hard to add things like
"unlock codes" that you can enter into the app that the server can verify.

If anyone is interested in such a thing once I have a solution working,
let me know. Of course with my luck I'd have it ready to ship about the
time Google offers similar functionality in the Market. Ahh well.
