Sorry it took me a while to get back.

I found out that the Sprint Total Equipment Protection app that came
installed will do what I want.  Not sure whether it uses C2DM, but it was
able to locate the phone.  I think I even had the GPS off.  Not sure whether
it turned the Wifi on for a one-time update or It might have been using the
WiFi map to locate it.

OTOH, I tried once to get the alarm to go off and I think it went to Google
Voice instead, so that might still be an issue.

The more time I spend with this thing, the more I realize it already has
most of what I need to keep it running lean and mean.

Didn't try to disable Google Voice.  Since I want it to keep working I'd
rather not mess with it.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
