Generally, in order to even qualify for an interview, you need to have a 4
year degree. Even then, you'll be subject to at least 5 to 7 interviews and
a fairly intensive review. Google employees are usually the highest caliber
available in the world. Obviously, they can make mistakes but the vetting
process for hiring is pretty intense. Ask anyone who's been through the
process.

There are exceptions to this no doubt and a few famous hackers will be
exempt from this requirement. Also, if you have decades of experience, the
education requirement can be waived as well.

A friend who was a development manager at Microsoft said they would hire anyone who could code. They even hired high school kids. When I was hiring the ability to code trumped any degree. You don't learn to be a professional musician by getting a music degree and neither will a computer science degree guarantee you can write code.
