I agree with the concept that people who get in computer science are as likely to be good programmers as those who get their education for something else. I went to school to be an electrical engineer and never worked a day in that field. What I did learn though was how to think. I worked endless problems regarding bridges and chemistry that gave me the chops to solve real world problems. These are things you really don't get by the school of hard knocks.
Degrees aren't really necessary for a person to be a good software engineer. Experience is a far better teacher. That's why the idea of hiring kids out of high school is ludicrous. They don't know how to wash behind their ears, much less deal with co-workers, customers and real world problems. Let them grow up a little first before throwing them to the wolves.
