Where Microsoft (and others, Oracle comes to mind also) scales and
Google doesn't is with a meaningful partner program. That of course
blows up the size of conferences, but that's a good thing - it's part
of the blueprint for the monetization of Microsoft's technologies by
small and mid size companies through value add such as shrinkwrap
software products and professional services. This is an aspect where
Google has a total blind spot, although it's a dead three way win for
Microsoft, partners and end users. It's hard to make a case against a
view that, in the end, all that Google is interested in is to keep it
all for themselves and not share with anybody on the outside beyond
what serves themselves. Sure, they'll have a few cuddly devs trot out
their stuff, but that's going to be it once again, I am sure.
So instead they're making conference attendance artificially scarce
and wrap it into some mythical registration, and off you go.
Personally, I just can't shake the impression that they're just peeing
down peoples' backs and tell them it's raining. I'll take a pass on I/
O again. Make sure y'all get real excited and clap real strong at the
keynotes' people.
