I believe that message has to do with the old system where we did nothing but check the box for copy protection. I haven't heard anything about the current licensing program going away.

You can also simply turn on the copy protection when you are publishing the
App, Google keeps saying they are going to remove it "soon" though. It
hopefully provides some annoyance to crackers.

Another potential issue with licensing service is that it requires an
internet connection to authenticate and if you are too aggressive with the
checking you can lock users out when they don't have internet.

Good information -- thanks all. My app is very specialized (genealogy)

more serious, and less likely to cheat than the kids that want to hack
the latest games. I was just wondering if there was any inherent
protection since it is definitely not worth my while to build anything
into the product.

I think the bottom line on app copy protection is:

The end result isn't worth the effort. Better to accept some piracy than
prevent valid users from using the app.

As Tim mentioned, the "Freemium" model is probably the most secure.
Everyone has implemented their upgrade system independently so it would
be
tricky for a hacker to figure out exactly what it takes for a free app
to
perform in premium mode. That makes freemium more secure than anything
overt. Another consideration is virtually all of the top apps and games
use
in-app purchases for revenue generation. There's a reason for that. You
might want to look at using that for yourself as well.
