Doesn't "su" give you the access you need? I had to use "su" in order to copy data into the system area.

The wireless network i am accessing uses WPA2 Enterprise and PEAP. I see that i can get access to the network (hopefully) by editing the wpa_supplicant.conf file like in linux, I have the settings for the network from another linux device. My problem is i can't get access to root (or do i even need to??) to edit the file. any ideas? i have the terminal emulator which seems useless since i don't have access to anything i need. It is an android Dev phone.
