I thought the exact same thing initially when looking into Angular2, Seemed like a massive step to move to TypeScript/ES6 after developing in ES5.
After researching I can definitely say that Typescript is the current supported language in most tutorials etc so it will be easier to pick up than ES5. However, While it seems like a daunting process it's not *too* different. It's essentially JS on steroids and has been a relatively smooth learning curve for myself. The setup for a dev environment is a lot more work currently, however there are plenty of starter kits on github now.
