1.  50th Issue of ODLL
================================================

This newsletter for Virginia Libertarians has been sent out since January 2009.
 This issue is our 50th -- 2 years! Raise your glass for the 50th!

Really, I swear -- it needs a permanent editor. Drop me an email at
<o...@lpva.com>.

================================================
2.  LTE: Libertarian O'Connor on Self-Defense Rights
================================================

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/letters-to-the-editor/2011/feb/20/tdopin01-correspondent-of-the-day-ar-853879/

I believe the T-D *inadvertently* makes the "print version" available
indefinitely (the main link falls offline after a month or so):

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/member-center/share-this/print/?content=ar853879

>>Rights, when regulated, cease to exist
>>
>>Andrew Goddard ["Regulating guns doesn't require ban,"] too carelessly
>>confuses privileges and rights by suggesting tests, licenses,
>>registrations, insurance, and inspections required for owning and
>>operating vehicles ought to apply to a constitutional right. Of
>>course, his real purpose is to isolate the Second Amendment from the
>>Bill of Rights and downgrade gun ownership to a mere privilege to be
>>conferred at whim by the government.
>>
>>In Goddard's statement "The Second Amendment is important, but it was
>>not intended to create an excuse to oppose all reasonable
>>public-safety measures," let's change Second to First. While requiring
>>Branch Davidians, Muslims or practitioners of other minority religions
>>to be tested, licensed, registered, insured, inspected, etc. as a
>>precondition to exercising faith or speech might result in a more
>>ordered society, we could no longer pretend to be free.
>>
>>Now let's change Goddard's statement about guns to apply it to
>>religions or free speech:
>>
>>"Religions (or free speech) do not cause criminality, they just make
>>criminality more deadly."
>>
>>Goddard's assurances that "not a single proposal" of the government
>>roadblocks, checks, and screenings he advocates would prevent lawful
>>exercise of rights rings hollow, because once rights are so completely
>>subject to government preconditions, they cease to be rights at all.
>>
>>Dennis J. O'Connor.
>>Prince George.

3. LTE: Libertarian Montoni on Egypt and the Market
================================================

The following letter was printed on February 16, 2011, in the Daily News-Record
(Harrisonburg VA). The online version will be available for free until March 2:

http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_action=doc&p_docid=135713DA1162ED80&p_docnum=1

>>Yes, Freedom Can Work In Egypt
>>
>>Bob Bersson recently claimed free market economics don't work, either
>>in Egypt or anywhere else. This is a patently false statement, on two
>>levels ("Egyptian Oppression Unsustainable," Feb. 2). First, there has
>>never been a "free market" in Egypt - starting a new business there is
>>an exercise in running Byzantine bureaucratic minefields. Getting the
>>required permissions without bribing state officials (often plural!)
>>is difficult.
>>
>>Real "free market" reforms would involve eliminating the permits,
>>licenses, fees, paperwork, zone restrictions and taxes that currently
>>stifle new business startups in Egypt - not to mention the byproduct
>>of eliminating the pervasive corruption that riddles all bureaucracy.
>>Second, the truth is that whenever markets are free and unfettered,
>>they often work wonders, lifting millions from poverty.
>>
>>Fat-government apologists have often pointed to modest,
>>"tinkering-around-the-edges" reforms in state-controlled markets as
>>examples of the "free market" in action; but "reforming" a
>>state-controlled market never delivers on the promises.
>>
>>Of course, that never stops agitators for the state from blaming
>>failures on the free market.
>>
>>Marc Montoni
>>Rockingham County

4. Jeff Costlow of Northern Virginia "Interviewed" by Supercop SS Agents
================================================

This would be sad if it were not so hilarious. A half-dozen royals (SS agents)
surround and interrogate a rather obviously harmless individual:

http://www.pixiq.com/article/secret-service-agents-detain-man-for-taking-photos

One wonders if they're simply looking for reasons to keep riding the overtime
clock.

As an aside, I have to agree with Daniel Quackenbush, one of the commenters:

>>"Rather than talk, he could have asked, "Am I being detained?" Answer,
>>"no." Am I free to go, then?" Answer, "no." "I'm going to remain
>>silent; I want a lawyer." No more talking.
>>
>>or
>>
>>"Am I being detained?" Answer, "yes." "I'm going to remain silent; I
>>want a lawyer." No more talking.

Time for everyone to get a pen, belt buckle, tie or hat cam and expose the
nobility all over the Net at every opportunity:

http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=12909791

Seems to me that if photos that anyone walking by could take of either the
white house, surrounding federal buildings, or a nuclear facility could
"facilitate a terrorist attack", then it's time to redesign the security so one
cannot see it. The truth is that every bureaucrat knows people taking photos
and videos of them don't facilitate terror in any way. What the 'crats are
after is simply conditioning us Mundanes to kowtow to arbitrary royal authority.

Frankly, I think the white house should be auctioned off to the highest bidder
and the prez should have to buy a brownstone in Georgetown like anyone else who
has an artificially-elevated sense of self-importance. In the meantime, we
should all buy hat cams, belt buckle cams, pen cams, and any other sort of
hidden camera accessory we can find, and video the heck out of every government
employee and put 'em up on YouTube.

The genie ain't going back in that bottle, uncle fed.

Contrast our "super security police state" white house grounds under D and R
presidents today, to Warren Harding's "open" White House:

<http://books.google.com/books?id=tADrm8tETh8C&lpg=PP1&dq=The+White+House%3A+An+Illustrated+Tour&pg=PA62#v=onepage&q=return%20to%20normalcy&f=false>http://books.google.com/books?id=tADrm8tETh8C&lpg=PP1&dq=The+White+House%3A+An+Illustrated+Tour&pg=PA62#v=onepage&q=return%20to%20normalcy&f=false

If a bureaucrat is so important that no one except his personal echo chamber of
bureaucrats and politicians is allowed to see him, then he's no longer serving
the people who elected him. Yeah, I can hear someone say "Right - great
comparison: 'Roaring 20s' and post 9-11!" But, well, yeah, it *is* a good
comparison. Making public officials less important or unimportant is the best
way to see to their "security". The president is a target because he has
power. Eliminate most of his power and he'll be largely forgotten by those who
now wish to hurt him.

5. VIDEO #1: Queen Hillary of Irony: Free Speech
================================================

"As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave her speech at George Washington
University yesterday condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not
allow free expression, 71-year-old
<http://www.commondreams.org/ray-mcgovern>Ray McGovern was grabbed from the
audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain
clothes, brutalized and left bleeding in jail. She never paused speaking. When
Secretary Clinton began her speech, Mr. McGovern remained standing silently in
the audience and turned his back. Mr. McGovern, a veteran Army officer who also
worked as a C.I.A. analyst for 27 years, was wearing a Veterans for Peace
t-shirt."

This video illustrates the cluelessness of the royalty better than anything
I've seen recently.

7. VIDEO #3: "The Free Frontier", by Bill Whittle
================================================

"All of my life I wanted to be an astronaut. I starting working in the Miami
Planetarium at age 13; studied aeronautics and engineering and propulsion
systems, and was stopped only by a 20/25 left eye during an exam for the US Air
Force Academy. But space exploration has always been my primary passion....
Here is a video called THE FREE FRONTIER. You’re seeing it at Big Government
because you will not find a cleaner contrast between what the government spends
and wastes and ends up with, versus the almost mind-boggling results the
private sector can achieve at a fraction in some cases 4-5% of the cost
that you and I pay every day in the form of taxes...."

http://biggovernment.com/bwhittle/2011/02/09/the-free-frontier/#idc-cover

[Editor's Note: This is a well-produced video promoting private space
exploration, and I highly recommend it.]

8. VIDEO #4: Just Desserts for the Predator Class
================================================

Would that kind of bungee-jumping were the fate of the real predators in our
society: the tax-sucking royals.
