Hi folks!

I'm not sure the Zastava workers themselves are "shills" for NATO, but their
leaders certainly are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the US State Department
(they have received AFL-CIO International Department funding since the early
1990s, and are currently cashing NED checks). Of course, they "opposed" the
NATO bombing (in the same sense Republicans "oppose" discrimination, or the
editors of the New York Times "oppose" the torture and murder of Palestinian
rock-throwers by the Zionist security forces. What else are they going to
say? It is a manufactured stance designed to lend credibility to their
other aims, which are a) the selling off of Yugoslavian state assets to
private investors, b) the removal of left-wing politicians from national
office, c) the imposition of a NATO client state government beholden to
Brussels and Washington, and d) integration into NATO and the EU.

Back during the bombing, I was a co-moderator of Marxism-International out
of Emory U. There was a long and acrimonious debate between A Olaechea (a
Peruvian national living in exile in London), and representativesof the
Zastava workers. They echoed the NATO line in everything but the bombing
itself.

You have to be very careful about labor "leaders" (my own carpenters union,
which in April left the AFL-CIO, is a textbook example of talking out of
both sides of its mouth). In Zimbabwe, the legitimate grievances of the
workers are being used by foreign-appointed "leaders" to excite popular
indignation and hostility toward the Mugabe regime. This to serve the
interests of Anglo American, Shell, and various other foreign capitalists.
In Zambia, a union president was installed by the IMF to gut social gains
won over decades of struggle. Poland is a famous example of AFL-"CIA"-
inspired "trade unions" coming to power and destroying the social safety net
(18% unemployment under a "Solidarity" government!). The criminal, fascist
state of "Israel" started life -as did most fascist movements - as an
embodiment of the political aspirations of organized labor.
Social-Democracy, like fascism, is a revision of Marxism. It's "labor"
component is peripatetic and unstable. More often than not, it comes
quickly to serve the interests of capital and its most reactionary and
revanchist social elements. I think this is typically true of the Zastava
people.

Louis Godena,
