You've raised a valuable point here concerning another
'tentacle' of the neoliberal global power grab - one
that's often overlooked: The role of the International
Affairs Department of the AFL-CIO.
In fact, go to the National Endowment for Democracy
Web site (http://www.ned.org) and - you'll have to
navigate a bit as the information has been buried
because of rank and file complaints about the matter -
and you'll see that when the NED was set up during the
Reagan years, the AFL-CIO Free Trade Union Institute
(a resurrection of George Meany's Free Trade Union
Committee) was - and remains - one of the four
component parts of the NED. (The other three are the
Center for International Private Enterprise, the
National Republican Institute for International
Affairs, and the National Democratic Institute for
International Affairs.)
Leon Lynch, Vice-President of the United Steelworkers
of America is on the Board of Directors of the
National Endowment for Democracy.
If the AFL-CIO has changed from the time of Meany to
that of Sweeney, it's changed least in regard to its
role of facilitating US foreign policy objectives.
Several very committed trade unionists around the
country are actively exposing and fighting against
this connection, and I'd be glad to provide
information on their work to anyone who wants it.
In the meanwhile, I notice that the NED has just added
three new members, three that are among the most
dangerous people alive today: Frank Carlucci, Wesley
Clark and Richard Holbrooke.
