Investigation of Belgian case against Ariel Sharon suspended

BRUSSELS, Sept 7 (AFP) -

The investigation of a civil suit accusing Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of war crimes in the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacres of Palestinians in Lebanon has been suspended to allow a court to decide whether it was being carried out properly, the prosecutor said Friday.

Two lawsuits are pending against Sharon alleging that he was guilty of war crimes during the massacres at the Palestinian refugee camps. They were brought by victims of the massacres and their families.

Michele Hirsch, retained by the Israeli government to represent the 73-year-old Israeli leader, has contended Belgian investigations of Sharon "violate the judicial sovereignty of the state of Israel," and that the investigating magistrate has no authority in the matter.

Patrick Collignon, the Belgian investigating magistrate chosen to prepare a possible case against Sharon, ruled in July that he was competent to investigate the case.

But Sharon's lawyer said she intended to challenge his competence.

The cases against Sharon are based on a 1993 Belgian law which stipulates that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide can be tried in Belgian courts, regardless of where they took place or the nationality or residence of either the victims or the accused.
