I'm not sure but it causes a LOT of confusion and hurts the reputation
of AoE when someone inevitably uses the one in the kernel and then it
doesn't work. It even catches me off guard every now and then: I'll
deploy a new machine, forget to update AoE, it first appears to work but
behaves in very strange ways, then I realize it's an old and very broken
aoe.ko. I'm not sure if it is Coraid not pushing a new one or Linus et
al not accepting it.
