Could this be a glibc version issue?  2.3.3 is only available in
binary form and so it can't be recompiled against the glibc that's
distributed with RH7.2 ...

I'm not sure what choice you have other than to back out to RH 6,
or upgrade to AOLserver 3.x.

I could be entirely wrong, too.  For your sake, I hope I am ... ;-)

Are processes going defunct, you said?  Grab the defunct process's PID,
and then grep for it looking where another process's PPID is the same
as the defunct process's PID, and kill THAT process.  See if that clears
anything up.
