I ran into similar problems installing 3.5.1 onto a FreeBSD box which is similar the OS the Mac is using. I had to upgrade GNU Make to version 3.80 to get everything to compile correctly. I believe OS X 10.2 has 3.79. I'll try on my mac at home later and let you know.
