Something is either set in the channel's statePtr, or DoReadChars is
returning an error.  You can hunt this down more in Tcl_ReadChars in
tclIO.c.  There are several possible causes.  Perhaps if you looked
at $::errorCode at that error point, you might get more info.  It may
be though that whatever is controlling the ssl stuff (if this is done
as a layered transform on the channel) is incorrectly setting the
error value.
