And now something really weird: When I happen to get "Unknown error
635", it seems I CANNOT catch the error!

So far, when I get any other "Unknown error N", I can catch the error,
and do. The first few times I saw this I was convinced I'd managed to
break something in my "catch, sleep for a second, and retry" code.
But no, I'd swear it's true, the 635 blows right through my catch. My
server log looks exactly as if my catch just wasn't there at all. How
is this even possible?? What could possibly cause it?
