I fixed it...it was very strange...some permissions had apparently
changed...further looking into the logs revealed that frontpage was
disabled because permissions on apache-fp directory where wrong...

I ran the default permissions script and now it works again.

Not sure how those permissions changed...I am the only one that
administers this box...

O well, I guess I'll just have to keep my eye on it.

I found other people talking about 2.0.40 in particular having some  
kind of weirdness with that routine to determine content length. You  
might have to upgrade to 2.0.47 perhaps. Seems like people have been  
having random problems with the problem happening all of a sudden. I  
saw that a programmer found that if he added a pause then everything  
was fine so perhaps your server load is higher and it's just now  
getting you to the point of the problem happening?

Just a guess.
