Hello everyone (and sorry in advance for cross-posting),
As part of my PhD I'm working on a system for lexical selection in
Apertium. I'd like to get an idea of how much improvement in translation
quality we can get with a short amount of time writing rules (8 hours).
I've already got rules for Basque--Spanish (thanks Linda!) and
Macedonian--English (thanks Filip!), but I need some rules for
English->Spanish and Breton->French.
The task description is as follows:
==============================================================
The work will involve writing rules using context to choose alternative
translations of ambiguous words. For example, if we have the phrase in
English:
"We can see from the most recent
report that the policy is not working."
The word "work" has several possible translations, among them "trabajar"
and "funcionar". The most frequent, or most general translation is
"trabajar". But in this case, a better translation would be "funcionar".
We can write a rule saying in the context "policy be not work", then
choose the translation "funcionar". This would be a basic rule. A more
complete rule might make a set of nouns which are unlikely to be used
with "trabajar" ... e.g. "computer", "method", "car", etc.
You will be given:
* A set of sentences which can be used to find contexts,
* A list of ambiguous words ordered by frequency, and
* A list of default translations.
You may make use of bilingual dictionaries, and other translation
resources.
The amount of time spent writing rules should be 8 hours. The
remuneration will be 80€.
==============================================================
If you'd like more details, contact me (email or IRC). The deadline is
the 19th of October.
Fran
