Aditi: you can add new tags but you have to provide a linguistic reasoning for them. It would be nice to discuss here what are the tags you need and why you need them. Apertium is packed with linguists that can lend some guidance here, at least by asking interesting questions about the languages involved.
It is not a bad idea to concentrate on word-by-word translation to start. If you have .t1x rules that don't work, you can ask here or, perhaps better, in the #apertium IRC channel (see the Contacts section of our wiki).
