I think I understand---straighten the diagram, then colour-codes for the
way the modules operate?

I was trying this, but using space. To the left, the key data for a
basic pair. To the centre, anything the left boxes drag across. To the
right, modules that may be used for refinement. But if that's not
obvious, it's not working.
