I received an e-mail just before Christmas from the Jefe de Servicio of
the DGPL, telling me about this project (mainly about the fact that it
had been submitted to the last Interreg POCTEFA-Spain-France-Andorra
Call). He mentioned the topic of automatic translation, inviting me to
go and talk with them in case I was interested. Before that, I had no
idea about this. The only additional details I have are the ones
published yesterday in the press release. The timeline of the project
evaluation is given here:

(in April 2017 a shortlist will be published and those projects will
have to make then a full proposal). So, it will take most of the year
before knowing whether this proposal will be funded.
I got as surprised as you when I read about using "deep learning" and
"big data" techniques for Aragonese. As Elhuyar is the main
technological partner of the project, I can imagine that perhaps the
project proposes the use of those kind of methods for Basque MT, and the
person writing the press release mixed the terms.
We agreed to meet some day next week at the DGPL, so perhaps I can tell
you more then. I will also show them what is already done is this field,
as I am not sure that they are aware. If you get to know anything more
about this, please tell me.
