You can set the task's priority to be high, and set the sort order to "priority, date"; or, set the due date to be near, and set the sort order to "date, priority" (this is the default order i think).
You can also tag your important tasks with a tag (e.g. create a tag Important), and filter on that tag to view just the important tasks.
