A couple more pieces of the puzzle: If I press the sync button, and I get the network activity indicator but no sync status bar at the bottom of the screen (which, as I mentioned, is what happens most of the time), all other buttons are unresponsive. I can press any button,and the system "sees" the keypress as indicated by the button being temporarily highlighted, but the normal response to that button press does not occur. Eventually, the network activity times out and the indicator goes away, but the program remains unresponsive until I kill it and restart it.
