I think the author was just trying to be a little
satirical to get published. I can see how he
would not recognize the value of "dwarf trees
that have been engineered" as a majority of the
public doesn't even understand the necessity of
budding/grafting to get a viable tree. But to not
recognize the value of SunCrisp as a good pie
apple? Well that's blasphemy. It's also one of
the apples that appears to not be ahead of schedule this year.
Hugh, if you're considering U-pick, give some
thought to the trellis system. One of the gripes
I have about moving from a high wire conduit
trellis to a 3-4 wire trellis is not being able
to cross through the rows. Some consider this an
advantage with U-pick as it gives some crowd flow
control. Gotta fence those doggies in, but barbed wire is not recommended!
