You can use the //gs as a faster //e.  It works great. 
All (or most all) cards are supported in the slots.  If 
you hold down the 8 key when it boots it will boot just 
like a //e.  Works for Appleworks Proterm and anything 
else you have.

For the most part that's what I do.  Your old //e monitor 
will work also but I think if you can get a //gs monitor 
its easier on your eyes.
