That plate most likely is the one that sits atop the drive's read/write head. Once fully opened, you'll likely discover that. A guess would be, if you placed a disk in the exposed drive, you'd see the read/write head floating above the disk's media, not touching it as it should be. Tweaking the head assembly may get it to rest back down onto the media. It's tricky. You need a machinists gentle touch.
